What does freedom really mean when others won’t let you be who you are? In Mountain Freedom by Johny Weber, Molly is living what appears to be a comfortable life on a successful Wyoming cattle ranch in the 1880s. She’s married to the driven Jackson, but his wealth brings expectations that take her further from the life she once called home at Twin Peaks. As the years pass, Molly struggles with the increasing divide in her marriage and watches her dreams die little by little. As she faces one challenge after another, she relies on her children and her brother Jake. She has also formed a friendship with Luke, one of her father’s employees, who comes to mean more to her than she ever expected. When faced with difficult choices, what will Molly decide?

One of psychologist Carl Jung’s ideas kept coming to mind as I read Johny Weber’s Mountain Freedom: “The privilege of a lifetime is to become who you truly are.” It perfectly describes Molly's struggle to be true to herself. All she wanted was to be loved and accepted for who she was, yet the one person who was supposed to do that made her be someone she was not. I could feel her loneliness, frustration, and most of all, her pain. The mix of family relationships, ranch life, and personal challenges kept me interested from beginning to end. The writing was easy to understand, full of detail, and moved at a good pace. Anyone looking for a historical western story, a family saga, or an emotional journey will want to read this book. This story stayed with me long after I finished the final chapter.
