Mousie’s Way Home by Apara Mahal Sylvester is a children’s story based on the tale of Mousie, a real rescue cat. Mousie is a big beautiful black cat with green eyes that spent his days outside chasing butterflies and resting in the sunshine. One evening on returning home, his humans were nowhere to be found. Abandoned, the cat had no choice but to face life alone in the wild. People’s cruelty scared the cat into no longer trusting them. He even stopped meowing for fear of dogs and other creatures hurting him. Hungry and desperate for food, Mousie came across a bowl of his favorite cat food on a nice lady’s back steps. Lost trust takes a long time to rebuild, but for Mousie to have a safe home, he must accept the woman’s kindness.
Mousie’s Way Home is the heartwarming story of the author’s experience in gaining the confidence of a feral cat. The narrative builds an adventure for the reader as the scared, lonely, abandoned cat runs from humans no matter what their intentions are. The illustrations are beautiful and reflect the emotions of the cat, bringing the words to life with thought-provoking details. My grandchildren rooted for Mousie as we read his story, hoping that he would regain his confidence in people. From the way Apara Mahal Sylvester writes, it is apparent that animal rescue is a passionate topic for her as she pours love and kindness into her story. This is a delightful tale that will be cherished by children and animal lovers alike.
