Mrs. Kaplan and the Matzoh Ball of Death by Mark Reutlinger is a pleasantly surprising gem, like discovering your favorite grandma moonlights as a detective. While the cover hints at what is to come, I was delighted that I had underestimated Mrs. Kaplan’s sharp detective instincts. From the quick lesson in Jewish culture to words I’m not entirely sure I have any business knowing, this story is a charming bundle of contradictions. I expected a couple of frail grannies fumbling with clues. I was wrong. The story begins after Mrs. Kaplan, or Mrs. K. as she is affectionately called, prepares her great pride: the matzoh ball soup. However, she becomes the prime suspect when an unexpected tragedy happens a few hours later. Top-notch detective work follows as Mrs. K. and her ever-curious assistant, Ida, launch their investigation. From questioning witnesses to bending a few rules, the duo leaves no stone unturned. With serious accusations hanging over her head, can Mrs. K. and Ida solve the case before the police make an arrest?

Mark Reutlinger's story appears to be a cozy mystery on the surface; however, it has several meaningful and layered themes woven into the humor and intrigue. Friendship, loyalty, justice, and truth drive the narrative. One key theme that resonated with me is aging and independence. Set in a Jewish retirement home, the story explores what it means to grow older with dignity and agency. Mrs. K. and Ida defy the stereotypes of elderly people as passive or frail. They are clever, active, and determined, showing that capability doesn’t fade with age. Another standout element is the portrayal of Jewish heritage, evident in the setting, food, language, and customs. I felt this enriched the plot, making it both unique and memorable. As I fondly bid Mrs. K. and Ida goodbye, I am left pondering one unanswered question: how do the Polish dress for a wedding? I wholeheartedly recommend this book to readers who appreciate stories filled with warmth, humor, and just the right amount of mystery.
