How can anyone possibly have too many books? Mrs. Owl has a lot of books, but too many? Perhaps she just needs to organize her library a bit better. Eliana Hidalgo’s Mrs. Owl’s Messy Library is definitely a mess gone too far. Full of dust, even bugs, and books scattered everywhere, Mrs. Owl’s library was in so much disarray that it was dangerous to maneuver – Mrs. Owl actually tripped over a stack of books and fell down the stairs. But the worst part is she couldn’t find anything. One day, trying to find a particular book, she finally gave up and started tidying things. It took time, but it was well worth the effort. And, when she found the book, she really didn’t need it anymore. Do you know what the book’s title was?
Eliana Hidalgo’s picture book story, Mrs. Owl’s Messy Library, is a clever take on the messy room theme coupled with the magical power of the written word. Told in simple language so young readers can easily follow along, the plot follows Mrs. Owl’s passion for books and her need to organize her treasured collection. The story begins with shared themes of Mrs. Owl’s books: some are happy and funny, while others are sad and make her cry. But each book had a special place in her heart. The illustrations are superb: bright, bold, and colorful, and certainly emphasize the importance and power of books. I think the words of the author’s dedication page say it all: “May your worlds be filled with the magic of books, but also remember to maintain order in your lives so that the treasures are never lost.” A poignantly beautiful story – I loved it!
