Murder in Maverick Bay by Louise Furley is a murder mystery that follows Giancomo “Gian” Montanero in the coastal town of Chicory Landing, Maine. Gian is a former Marine Raider and a detective who is learning how to be part of the family he was separated from as a child after spending most of his life alone. His brothers become victims of a violent shooting, and a local marina worker is murdered. Soon, Gian finds himself drawn into a complex investigation that involves events connected to the town’s annual Lobster Festival, suspicious financial dealings, and connections that might go beyond the seaside community. Gian begins following a trail of clues through marinas, local businesses, and small-town politics. He finds an unexpected ally in Nicolle “Nikki” Kelly, a baker who dreams of opening a tea shop. But with every answer uncovered, there seem to be more questions.
I loved how Louise Furley blended mystery, family drama, humor, and a touch of romance into this story. I liked Gian’s character because he appeared tough on the outside, but underneath, he was hiding years of loss and abandonment. He also had instincts and determination as an investigator. Nikki was another favorite. She added charm to the otherwise darker side of the investigation. The mystery was layered and just kept evolving with clues. There was a range of clues from strange scents to hidden weapons. I enjoyed following the marina investigation and the discovery of new evidence at the shooting site. Readers who enjoyed similar works like Tana French’s The Searcher would appreciate Murder in Maverick Bay.
