A dedicated midwife and amateur detective, Maeve O'Reilly is married to Will Kensington who runs a successful catering firm. The couple has adopted beautiful little Rowan, and Maeve is pregnant with her second daughter. They live in the cozy town of Langford, New England. In the pre-Christmas bustle, Maeve goes to the local library to take a book and a knitting pattern. To her horror, Maeve finds the head librarian, Ingrid Olson, dead. Her cheeks are red, and there is a smell of almonds in the air. Are the almond cookies on Ingrid's desk poisoned? Maeve's mother, Mary, asks her and her sister, Meg, a real estate agent, to help her fellow Hanville Grove residents find the jewelry they believe is stolen. And why does Crosby Dawson, the ambitious new librarian and Ingrid's rival, keep finding herself in life-threatening situations? Murder on the Books by Christine Knapp, the third in the Modern Midwife Mysteries, is an engaging read for fans of mysteries, crime dramas, and detective novels.

Christine Knapp's Murder on the Books offers a puzzling and cleverly built intrigue. The lovable protagonist narrates the story of her investigation with a good pinch of dry humor and a unique background revealing the intricacies of the midwifery profession. Maeve is a true professional who treats her patients with compassion, attention, and respect. Maeve investigates Ingrid's death not because she's nosy or bored but because Ingrid was her friend and she loved her. Maeve genuinely wants to help people, and her ethical standards are high. The O'Reillys' strong-minded matriarch, Mary, is an exceptional secondary character. The author adds heartwarming touches to the narrative, describing the senior residents of Hanville Grove. Knapp entwines the riveting subplots into the main plotline, leaving no unanswered questions, and surprises us with an emotional ending. I appreciate the author's clear writing style and the bonus recipes.
