Jennifer Knox shares her turbulent past with readers. Musical Chairs is an excellent name for this book, just like the child’s game of changing chair when the music stops, Jen moved or in her words ran. Many would call Jen a troubled teen. Her home life was turbulent. At fifteen she ran away. At eighteen she began dancing at a strip club. Drugs and alcohol took over her life. Addiction ran through Jen’s family. Her addiction led to blackouts, rape, assault and alcohol poisoning.

Where the first sections of this book tell Jen’s descent into hell, the next section tells her climb out. Jen began having panic attacks. She took at job with Barnes and Noble. She enjoyed working there; talking with other readers and shelving books she wanted to read. She conceived ideas for books. She was determined to become mentally healthy. Jen discovered that mental illness ran in her family, agoraphobia, schizophrenia, OCD, paranoia, depression, hysteria and melancholia.

Jen Knox is brutally honest in her book, Musical Chairs. I do suggest that she hire and editor. I found several mistakes. As Jen looks back in retrospect she learns much about herself. It stayed with me long after I read the last page. I found myself examining my life, it was a painful experience. I look forward to reading more of Jen’s work. She is an extremely talented author, capable of pulling the reader into her story and capable of conveying emotions in a way that few authors can.
