Mary Bliss Parsons and Sarah Lyman Bridgeman are young girls who have just arrived in the Connecticut area from England. Mary’s family struggles to make ends meet in the new country, while Sarah’s family has a little more success. It is a new frontier where it is necessary to follow the rules of the Puritans very closely, be fearful of the Indian attacks, and learn a new trade and a new way of life. Witchcraft is a serious offense, frowned upon by the Puritans and punishable by death. Mary is a strong-willed young woman while Sarah is weak and afraid. The girls work hard to help their families and then they find their true loves, marry, and begin their own lives. Mary has a loving marriage and is blessed with sons and daughters. Sarah is not so lucky and, though she desperately wants children, she suffers hard pregnancies and the loss of her babies. Sarah becomes depressed and blames Mary for all of her misfortunes. She convinces her husband that Mary is a witch who should be punished and brings her up on witchcraft charges. Mary is forced to stand trial and endure all the pain it causes.
My Enemy’s Tears: The Witch of Northampton is the best book I have read in a long time. Karen Vorbeck Williams has taken a true event and created a fictional story that I found hard to put down. I was taken on a journey back to 1633 and introduced to some very interesting people. My Enemy’s Tear’s: The Witch of Northampton has everything a good book needs, from a strong plot to characters that became my friends and enemies. If you enjoy reading about frontier life, the Indians, the early days, witchcraft, then My Enemy’s Tears is a must-read for you. This is a winner from cover to cover.
