In My Faithful Savior, Susan Haring discusses moving from Ohio to Georgia, where her husband is studying. As they start their family, she trusts in God and even prays for Nathan before his birth. Once Nathan is born, he grows up to be thoughtful and sensitive to others' feelings. After graduating from high school, it becomes clear that Nathan has been called by God to serve in the US Army. It is at the height of the Iraq War, which worries Susan so much, but she surrenders to the will of God. Soon, Nathan completes his basic and other training, and despite the challenges and other perceived physical weaknesses, the Lord saw him through. When the time comes to be deployed to Baghdad, the family is not there to bid him farewell, but his best friend travels to Fort Bragg to be with him. How will things turn out for this family of believers?
My Faithful Savior by Susan Haring is a story of hope, humility, and total submission to the will of God. I loved how it shows the importance of having a strong support network of brothers and sisters in Christ when going through challenging times. It is also very motivating to learn that Nathan kept his faith and frequently prayed during his deployment, showing that one can witness and demonstrate trust in God even in difficult circumstances. This thought-provoking work also gets one thinking about the effects of war, not just on soldiers but also on their families and societies at large. The reader will also appreciate the quotes and references to the scripture, which can be used to delve further into scriptural reading. This was a good read, and I look forward to something else by Susan Haring.
