"My Horse Samson" is a beautifully written and illustrated picture book by Ashley Ball. Can you imagine anyone wanting to abuse, neglect or starve an animal to death? Sadly, there are many cruel people in the world who reluctantly do so. This is thirteen year old Ashley Bell’s true and detailed story of rescue, hope and determination. Ashley and her family adopt two very abused and frightful mares from a rescue farm. After they have them home, one of the mares gives birth to a feisty little foal that is named Samson. Soon the foal is following Ashley around like a puppy dog and immediately finds a place in her heart forever. Ashley and Samson would begin their adventures in preparing for competition and a life-long bond that only they could understand and share. They participate in jumping competitions and 4-H events at the fair. Ashley even gets life changing advice from a talented Horse Whisperer. Will Ashley and Samson be able to overcome the odds and win the crown of Grand Champion at the West Virginia State Fair?
This is a wonderful story of hope and courage! Ashley did a remarkable thing for her rescued mares and foal at an early age. Not only did she rescue them from suffering and pain, but she gave them hope, compassion and unconditional love. And at just thirteen years of age, Ashley has also begun her adventure of becoming an enthusiastic author!
Ashley is a great role model for all young animal lovers as well as all adults. I loved this story because of her determination and devotion to her permanent friend, Samson. In the end, what matters is not the accomplishments, but the love and friendship they embrace. This story is very easy for grade school children to comprehend and fall in love with. My eight year old daughter is in love with this book and wants to bring it to school for show-and-tell. She was truly inspired by Ashley and can relate because of her love of animals. So not only am I giving this a high review, but my daughter insists on giving a high review also! We loved that we were able to fully connect to the story with the amazing photos included of Ashley and Samson. This is a must read story for children on up to adults and we found it to be incredibly heartwarming and life-altering.
