My Life Adds Up by Frederick Hillhouse is an autobiography about an average, so-called common man living an average life in the world, but that is precisely what makes this book such a wonderful read. For it is the common people and their lives that make up the bulk of the population and so to hear someone’s life story of almost 100 years is like taking a walk into history. The book is written in a mostly chronological order starting with Frederick’s birth and early years, his adolescence and his passion for music, dance, etc. that continued into his adult years, his stint in the military during World War II and war experiences including time in Japan, his subsequent life and living in New York, San Francisco, his relationships and friendships with women, his lifelong bachelorhood, and most of all, his solid relationships with his entire family, including his extended family scattered across various parts of the country and abroad.

My Life Adds Up by Frederick Hillhouse is a simple, heartfelt autobiography. Reading it gave me a “wholesome” feel, as if this is someone who has led a more or less “normal, well-adjusted” life which feels like a breath of fresh air. I appreciated Frederick’s account and I enjoyed reading about all of his experiences as a young man and during his middle years. Frederick mentions he has no regrets about not marrying or having kids which is, of course, great, but still I would have liked to perhaps understand a bit better why that never happened, especially back in those days when marriage was more readily entered into in general. But still, that didn’t take away anything from the book itself and I loved reading it. Frederick’s simple, honest charm is refreshing and his close relationships with his family members are something that more people should aspire to. This is a great read!
