People can be annoying. Some slurp their drinks, some burp loudly, there are interrupters, those who pay no regard to time, people who stare, and those who snore. But none is as annoying as the narrator’s pet, Peeve, who is not your typical animal but a mischievous creature. It is noisy and rough, ripping off fabric and leaving you without peace. It troubles, and it taunts, and the narrator is determined to rid himself of this pesky creature by luring it away with a new victim. The story takes an unexpected turn when Peeve speaks up, revealing that it is no mere pet but an agent working for “Bothersomm's Pain in the Neck," a company dedicated to keeping people in check. Through Peeve's explanation, readers discover that pet peeves aren't random annoyances; they're intentional reminders designed to help people recognize their own flaws and bad habits. Peeve argues that the narrator is just as bothersome as the creature itself, and everyone has pet peeves of their own.

My Pet, Peeve by Camden S. Holley is a meditation on self-awareness and perspectives. The author doesn't shy away from a genuine moral lesson: we're often blind to our own annoying habits while hyper-focused on others'.  Holley uses Peeve to hold up a mirror; the narrator is just as bothersome and annoying as the creature, and so are we sometimes. Illustrated by Rylee Mullins with impressive skill, it is expressive in how it shows the ragged menace, which is Peeve, and the narrator's desperation to eliminate the creature. My Pet, Peeve is a remarkably sophisticated children’s poem for kids aged 8-12.
