Nina Purtee brings us romance with a splash of cabernet and a good dose of rodeo in Whispers of Blue Ridge. It’s time for the annual festival in Blue Ridge, Georgia, and Savannah Gray is still coming to terms with the tragic deaths of her parents three years back. Her grandfather, Duke, has decided to sponsor the famous Jake Rollins for this year’s rodeo. There is an instant connection between Savannah and Jake. However, navigating their feelings for each other might have to take a back seat to the revelation of secrets between two feuding families and one tragic accident. And Jake Rollins didn’t only come to Blue Ridge for the rodeo. He’s been there before and desperately wants to learn the truth behind his memories.

Author Nina Purtee has created a beautiful story full of hope and Southern charm. The character growth is evident throughout this book, which makes for a compelling plot. The chapters are just long enough to really drive the pace, which I enjoyed. Combined with the slow unravelling of years of secrets and the steady build of a connection between the two main characters, this creates a perfect balance. There is a resounding theme of truth and reconciliation throughout the book, accompanied by friendship and family. The characters are so relatable and likable that I could easily imagine myself as part of the community. Whispers of Blue Ridge is wholesome women’s fiction suitable for young adult readers as well. The combination of cowboys and vineyards makes for an interesting pairing, and it works.

In Whispers of Blue Ridge by Nina Purtee, Savannah Gray is trying to keep her family's Georgia vineyard afloat while living with the trauma of the mountain road accident that took the lives of her parents. Her grandfather, Duke, is her main support, but the arrival of a traveling rodeo star named Jake Rollins suddenly changes the energy in town. Jake isn't just there for the competition. He’s actually the person who pulled victims from the wreckage of the very crash that took the lives of Savannah's parents three years ago. As the local fair and rodeo events get into full swing, Savannah and Jake end up in a series of run-ins, from an unplanned photoshoot to a quiet moment at the marina. Neither of them realizes at first how deeply their traumas are actually linked. But soon enough, a local lawyer starts dropping hints that the 'accident' had more survivors and secrets than anyone is really letting on. Can Savannah and Jake's new relationship survive the truth about that night?

Whispers of Blue Ridge by Nina Purtee is a compelling romance tale that definitely doesn't race through the plot or its build-up. The storyline reflects that sticky, slow Southern atmosphere, taking time to let small-town rituals breathe. The chemistry between Savannah and Jake is a slow-burning one, for sure. But it held my attention because they both had so much baggage to unpack before they could even begin to really acknowledge each other. Their blossoming chemistry is what urged me to keep reading, because behind the murkiness of their baggage, there's an authentic relationship waiting to be explored. I loved how the author used little subplots, like a long-standing winery rivalry, to immerse us further into the rich local culture. There were a few interesting mystery-driven story arcs that kept me turning the pages during the slower chapters. But since I'm not dropping any spoilers, I'll say this much: romance enthusiasts will definitely enjoy this book. It's a great choice for readers who want a story about starting over or seeing a relationship gradually grow into something real.

Nina Purtee’s Whispers of Blue Ridge is set at Graystone Winery in Blue Ridge, Georgia, where Savannah Gray has devoted her life to preserving the vineyard her family built. She keeps her attention fixed on the daily work that has sustained her since the loss of her parents in a fatal mountain road crash. That is interrupted when rodeo rider Jake Rollins arrives for the town fair and begins to recognize details tied to the night of the accident. His return draws Savannah into a search for the truth behind what happened on Wolfpen Gap Road. As their connection grows through long days at the fair and late-night conversations by the lake, unanswered questions arise, leaving Savannah to decide what the truth may cost her, the winery, and the life she has always known.

Nina Purtee’s Whispers of Blue Ridge takes its title from something the Blue Ridge mountains seem almost determined to do, and that is hold on to memory. This is a place that remembers. The land carries the echoes of everything that has happened there, and Purtee is an expert in getting readers to feel that in our bones. Savannah is a great lead, fully fleshed out as a woman carrying grief of her own, while still full of kindness and generosity. I love Lizzie Maxwell, Savannah's friend, who is encouraging and empathetic when it comes to Savannah’s abandoned plans to study winemaking in Italy. Purtee beautifully balances both heartening and heartbreaking moments, from Savannah sharing a dance with Jake to finding her grandfather, Duke, seated beneath an old oak and grieving his losses. With excellent prose, a solid mystery, and a lot of hope, this is a book worth reading. Very highly recommended.
