In My Venus Fry Trap by Mr. Sun, a girl receives an alien pet called a Venus 'fry' trap from her parents. She is excited to have this new pet, but a problem arises when she tries to feed it fries… it won’t eat them! Strange that it’s named something that catches fries, yet hates the taste of them. She tries all of her favorite foods – chicken nuggets, macaroni and cheese, ice cream… even pizza! The new pet turned up its green nose at everything! She starts out just wanting to please the demanding little plant, but begins to worry that it will starve to death before she can discover anything the creature will eat! Will the girl ever find the right food for her new pet, or will it die?

Every child wants a pet that they can shower love on. A Venus fly trap is an odd pet, but an exciting and interesting one, and its dietary needs are not obvious. My Venus Fry Trap by Mr. Sun is a delightful tale of a girl’s desperate search for the right food to feed a Venus fly trap. The author parallels the food the girl likes with the bugs the plant would eat. Written in Seuss-like rhyme, every page is stunningly illustrated with breathtakingly detailed artwork. The book ends with a panel explaining that we are all different, and enjoy different things. It drives home the point that being unique is okay and makes the world more fun. If I ever bought a Venus fly trap for my children, this outstanding book is definitely one I would want. Perfect as a children’s book for any family with or without a Venus fly trap!

Is it a fly trap or a fry trap? And is it really from the planet Venus? A little girl is gifted what her parents call a Venus Fry Trap, from Venus, she understands. It’s supposed to trap and eat fries, but when she tries to share her French fries with the Venus Fry Trap, it doesn’t do anything. She then tries chicken nuggets and ice cream, all favorites of the little girl, but the Venus Fry Trap shows no interest at all. Concerned about the lack of nourishment, the little girl is surprised when a fly flies past and the Venus Fry Trap snaps its big green mouth with big green teeth and eats the fly. Further offerings of bugs activate the same response. So is it a Venus Fry Trap? Or a Venus Fly Trap?

Mr. Sun’s story, My Venus Fry Trap, is in rhyming verse that introduces a strange plant that might be from Venus, that might be a Fry Trap, that might really enjoy flies. Especially French flies! This rhyming ditty is full of humor and perhaps some grossness, but it introduces young readers to unusual plants and what they can and can’t do. This will make a fun-filled book for young readers when accompanied by colorful illustrations. There’s lots of laughter to be shared with this poem. It might be interesting to include some interesting facts about a Venus Fly Trap. After reading this little ditty, a young reader will want to know if this unusual plant/ pet/creature is real. A clever little poem.
