It's beach time and everyone's happy. But there are some things that you should know about the beach before you go. The beach is not just for you. It's for everyone to enjoy and it's for the creatures that live beside and in the sea. If you remember to respect others by keeping your volume of excitement low, by not splashing strangers, by not totally burying people in the sand, by not laughing at others because of what they wear or how red and sun burnt they are, and by allowing others to enjoy their time as well, then the beach experience can be a positive one for everyone, not just you.
Writing in second person is difficult to do without sounding too dictatorial, or too bossy. Carolyn LeComte's Never Invite a Seagull to Lunch is all written in second person. She is speaking to readers as if they were her own children and teaching them some rules that everyone should respect while enjoying time at the beach. The illustrations are colorful and positively support the key points that the author is hoping to instill in young readers who enjoy going to the beach. But these key points, rules if you will, are things that people of all ages should consider, not only on the beach, but everywhere they go.
Common courtesy and respect for others' space is something that is sadly neglected in today's society where everyone is ultimately concerned with the almighty 'me.' This book is a clever instructional picture book for young readers about proper beach etiquette and proper etiquette in general. Well done.
