Nina and the Mystery of the Missing Necklace by Jonia Epp features Nina the Cat Detective, her bouncy tortoiseshell kitten assistant, Paris, and her human, librarian, Emily. When Mrs. Hargrove, a kind old lady who lives down the street, loses her cherished sapphire necklace, the team is ready to help her search for it. At her house, Nina notices an open window next to the little table where the jewelry box is kept, and in the flower bed below, she finds a clue. No one they talk to -- the gardener, Mr. Green, Lucy who loves bright things, Mr. Pim at the curiosity shop, Tommy playing at the village green, and old Mr. Johnson, with his pet bird -- has seen anything, or so they say. When Detective Brooks from the police station joins the team, it’s only a matter of time before Nina puts all the pieces together and solves the mystery.
This charming book is written for children in the 5 to 9 age group, but will appeal to many adults and all cat lovers as well. Nina and the Mystery of the Missing Necklace is a great read-aloud book, and the appealing setting and characters will encourage independent reading. The pictures are marvelous, with exquisite detail and very real expressions on all characters, especially the cats. Together with the text, they create a world where readers would love to spend more time. This is the first book in Jonia Epp’s Whiskers & Clues: Nina, the Cat Detective series, and I look forward to reading all of them. Highly recommended for read-aloud sessions, schools, and libraries.
