In No Hill to Die On, the fourth volume in Martin Roy Hill’s mystery series, Peter Brandt, a hardworking journalist in San Diego, is shocked when the girlfriend of his older brother by ten years is brutally murdered. Brandt’s brother Keith was supposedly killed in a Saigon bar bombing during the height of the Vietnam War. A conniving fellow Marine known as TD was also killed. The novel starts with the present-day murder of Keith’s once-girlfriend who recognized TD as still alive and insisted that, if correct, Keith could also be living. Thus, the plot begins. Brandt takes up the search for his sibling and/or Keith’s possible murderer. His investigation takes us deep into the corruption of the U.S. military supply world. He is living with Jo, a beautiful but wounded military police officer, along with a pugnacious and demanding cat, Jack. Brandt received a facial wound during his journalism assignments in Reagan’s Central American wars and became fearless in his search for a cherished brother whom he thought had died in Vietnam.
I got into this mystery novel from the first page. Hill’s writing is crisp and direct, mixing the intrigue of Peter's brother’s supposed murder and possible reemergence with his relationship with Jo, feline Jack, and his pals from surfing and law enforcement. Along the way, Hill gives us a marvelous tour of San Diego and its environs, a vision of a freelance journalist’s daily working life, and the dangers of poking one’s nose into military corruption. His compassion for Vietnam vets runs deep as he encounters them on his quest to track down the truth about his brother’s murder in Saigon. The action and suspense increase as we approach the climax on a remote Costa Rican mountaintop. No Hill to Die On by Martin Roy Hill is a must-read for any fan of action/adventure combined with romance and wry wit.
