Book I of J.B. Bergstad's Hyde's Corner Trilogy is titled No Man's Land and is a historical fiction piece about two feuding families. The Burks and the Hydes are two families who want to scratch out a life in No Man’s Land, wild prairie country in Oklahoma. The Burks came all the way from southern Tennessee to pursue a family dream. Their story starts in 1877 with their trek from Tennessee. They lay over in Texas as they searched for a better life, but eventually settled in Oklahoma. Silas Burk is honest and fair. His dream is to own a cattle ranch and provide for his family. The Hydes, led by father Cedric and son Jared, left England for a new corner of the world and want to have a British style of upper class refinement in their new world. But No Man’s Land is a lawless, unforgiving area, and rights are a hard thing to come by. They are even harder to protect.
I really enjoyed No Man's Land. It was part western, part historical fiction, and I liked that the story felt as if it could have really happened. I almost believed that there really were these two feuding families and that I was reading their family histories. That just shows how strong a writer J.B. Bergstad is. This story has vivid characters, an excellent plot line, tons of action, and is overall well-written. It is one great family saga, and I loved the fighting between the two sides.
