Author Biography

Two years after Matt was married, he was diagnosed with brain cancer, and was told that he had less than three months to live. But with a successful surgery, radiation and a lot of prayer, Matt is still here ten years later, alive and cancer free. Matt started writing his story about everything that had happened to him, but the hole in his brain left him with reading problems. Unable to proofread what he had written, he put the book to be aside and hoped to pick it up again some day after his brain has had time to heal.

Four years later Matt’s daughter Nora was born. Motivated by his precious little girl, Matt tried writing again. But he still had problems with his reading, so the story changed from 300 pages to 30. More artwork than words. While putting the new story together Matt’s grandma was diagnosed with lung cancer. His mom left home to go help out in this terrible time. And while she was over with her parents, she took some time out to get a freckle checked out, she had skin cancer. The tumor was remover and she is fine, but after the bump was removed, his mom was left with a scar that went from the bottom of her wrist, up to her elbow pit. Forever scared. Matt’s grandma did not survive. A sweet little lady that loved whales, golf and cheating at cards. A lady that took Matt out for DQ’s dipped comes every year on his birthday, was gone.

Cancer handicapped Matt, scared his mother and killed his grandma. NORA'S PINK BOOTS is a combination of Matt's familys stories

Today is Nora’s Birthday and her dad wants to buy her new boots to replace her old ones. The only problem is that Nora doesn’t want new boots, and no matter how hard her dad tries to change her mind by showing her pretty new shoes and boots, she doesn't agree. She is keeping her old smelly pink boots no matter what he says! But there is a reason Nora wants to keep these boots. You see, her mommy gave these boots to her and that makes them so very important to her because she remembers things she and her mommy did together while she was wearing these boots.

This is an adorable and precious book, and as I read it I couldn’t help crying over Nora’s situation with her boots. It was heartwarming just to see that she was so adamant about keeping her dirty boots. This is a great book for young children who have a parent or family member with cancer. I love the attitude of Nora’s dad: the love and patience he shows toward Nora and her determination to keep the boots.

I appreciate authors like Matthew Hoggins for writing books like this for children. This book brings the difficult situations down to a child’s level with lots of feelings of love and understanding. The book itself is beautiful with the pink representing Breast Cancer awareness. The illustrations are just perfect to capture a child’s interest. The colors are vivid, bold and bright and the characters illustrated in it are adorable!

I highly recommend this book for children who have a parent or loved one that has cancer or some other life threatening illness. This book might be something that will calm their fears and help understand the difficulties they are facing.

I really appreciated this review. This was a difficult story for me to write because of its personal nature, and the age group that’s intended for. I truly believe that Joy understands this book and the importance behind it. In her review she was able to package the story together in a quick but detailed paragraph. And then Joy added a personal touch as she wrote about how she was feeling as she was reading through the story. I am very thankful for the things that Joy wrote and the recommendation that she added. It’s reviews like this that make me happy I wrote “Nora’s Pink Boots” and hope to write more in the future. Thank you Joy and “Readers Favorite“
