Not Without a Fight: The Story of a Polish Jew’s Resistance is the true story of a boy who was eight years old when Germany invaded Poland in 1939. Casimir Bieberstein was part of a rich, powerful, but kindly family. But because he was Jewish, he and his family were persecuted by the Nazis. Cass, as he was known, fought back by joining the Jewish Resistance. He saw his family and closest friends taken away by the enemy, but the tragedies of their disappearances and deaths only spurred on his determination to try to take back his homeland from the invaders. He wasn’t yet a teenager when he engaged the Nazis in battle, using everything from common supplies to captured weapons in his fight. The book is coauthored by D.W. Duke and the son of Casimir Bieberstein, Thomas Biebers (Bieberstein). It includes numerous photos of the author and his family from the pre-war years.
This book is a terrific read. D.W. Duke and Thomas Biebers are superb writers. They tell the true story of Casimir Bieberstein’s fight against the Nazis in compelling detail. Not Without a Fight is a history lesson wrapped in an incredible story of courage, loyalty, and love for family, friends, and country. One doesn’t need to be a student of WWII to find this book fascinating. Indeed, everyone should read it as a reminder of the horrors of Nazism and it will increase their determination never to let similar events happen again. I had no idea about the extent of the Polish Resistance, or how successfully they fought against the Nazis. I’m sure that most people don’t, either. They need to read this book.
