Inspired by Edwin McDowell's novel, To Keep Our Honor Clean, Terry Dwyer recounts his real-life experience at Marine Corps boot camp in Object Lessons: A Parris Island Memoir. The author talks about his journey of joining the Marines and his determination to serve his country. For months, he went through various training phases, each challenging his physical and mental strength. Although the process seemed tortuous, it taught him the value of hard work, and the true meaning of teamwork, and instilled a sense of pride in his accomplishments. The author also sheds light on the harsh reality of training and the often rough nature of drill instructors. He compares the training he went through fifty years ago to modern-day training, noting the changes and improvements and highlighting what it takes to become a Marine.

Object Lessons: A Parris Island Memoir is an enthralling story that combines tense, comedic, and suspenseful moments. I could not put this book down because it was captivating and eye-opening. Terry Dwyer's personality shines through every page, and his casual narration makes the book an enjoyable read. I appreciated how the book highlighted the positive changes that military training can bring, a topic that is often overlooked. The lessons learned during training not only instill discipline but also prepare the Marines for harsh terrain and the mental effects of being in a war. The camaraderie built helps them find trust and know each other's weaknesses and strengths. The book is well-written and easy to follow and understand, with simple language and well-defined terms. I recommend this book to appreciate the hard work and sacrifice required to join any military group.
