On Becoming a Dinosaur: A Typesetter Speaks by Java Davis is a very well written and informational piece about the life of a woman trying to make a better life for herself. In 1970, women had few working options, but Java Davis wasn't about to let that stop her from becoming one of the premiere typesetters in the country. She took the craft she learned and turned it into a bustling business that gave her everything she could ever want from a job. Even more important than the above average pay was the fact that she loved what she did. She had pride in her work and enjoyed getting up every day to do her job.
On Becoming a Dinosaur: A Typesetter Speaks is an excellent read about a woman's working life and how she strove to do the best she could against the odds. I loved this story. It is such a unique story, one that I have never read before and I found that uniqueness refreshing. Hearing a story about a woman who was able to overcome adversity and be successful in a man's world (in 1970!) is very interesting and inspiring. The only thing I disliked about this story was the fact that it was so short! My only complaint was the abrupt ending. I wanted to know what happened to Java Davis and the rest of her life. I wanted to read about the happy ending and how she overcame adversity once more.
