Orpheus: Early Myths Book 12 is a wonderful book that tells the stories and myths about the Greek gods and goddesses. Dr. Simon Spence gave life to legends about Orpheus, Hades, Cerberus, and several other mythological beings in a way that anyone can enjoy. I thoroughly enjoyed how Orpheus discovered music and learned how to play what his parents, Apollo and Calliope, knew, then created his own melodies. I love how the story reflects the power of love and the power music has to mend so much in a nearly magical way. Even in the face of the tragic death of his wife, Orpheus shows how important it is not to give up and to find a way to press on so that he might find her again.

The beautiful illustrations by Colm Lawton deliver this story as well as the narrative does. I loved watching the story unfold through visual cues as Orpheus inspired others with his music, even as he crossed the river Styx to get to the Underworld. This story is more than just a story about mythological people. It also reflects on the way love, life, sadness, and anger can be mended by the elements around us. I have always enjoyed great mythological stories. This book has renewed my love for legends and the part they play in the way the world was shaped in older times. Now I need to go back and read the other books before this one as I wait patiently for Dr. Simon Spence to deliver a new one. I will be looking forward to more stories like Orpheus.
