Papa the Stockfarmer, written by Mairi McLellan, is the second book in the What Do the Grown-ups Do? series and this book depicts the time that the three Mackenzie sisters spend with their grandfather (Papa), learning about being a stockfarmer. The girls are curious about what grown-ups do each day. Their mother has told them that in order to choose a career when they are older, they need to learn about various jobs. The girls spend the day with Papa, learning about his farm, on which he raises sheep and cows. Ava, Skye, and Gracie are able to see the food they eat and how it is prepared and stored for winter feed, the type of land that is needed to raise stock, and how vets help farmers. Although it is a lot of work, the girls have fun and learn that it can be enjoyable raising stock and living on a farm.
This book explores the life of a farmer raising sheep and cows along with growing crops and maintaining the land on the farm as well. The various duties are described in detail and through dialogue between the Mackenzie sisters and their grandfather; and also depicted through the many photographs included throughout the book. I love the many details that are shared, giving such a good description of the job, and also the way in which the information is presented. The reader is able to experience the job through the eyes of the girls and this is such an excellent approach as the book is geared for elementary age girls. They will be able to make a connection with the girls in the story. I highly recommend this book and series for anyone who has young daughters and for anyone working with girls who will be exploring career options with them.
