Passion's Child (Jane Digby's Diary) by C.R. Hurst is a captivating historical novel that introduces a 10-year-old named Jane Digby, who yearns for freedom and adventure. Feeling stifled by her structured life at Holkham Hall and eager to escape her new governess, Jane sets off on a daring journey to visit a Romany camp on her grandfather's estate. Along the way, she meets Vanlo, a Romany boy her age, and the two spend the day delving into the estate’s wonders. From unearthing a Roman coin at the ruins of an ancient fort to sharing songs and laughter, Jane is enchanted by the warmth, music, and culture of the Romany people. As dusk descends, her grandfather comes to collect her from the camp, but Jane's experience lingers, igniting her dreams of a life filled with freedom, friendship, and adventure. This beautifully crafted story sets the stage for Jane's future escapades and personal growth.

I thoroughly enjoyed the charm and imagination woven into Passion's Child by C.R. Hurst. The narrative masterfully blends historical accuracy with a sprinkle of whimsy, painting a vivid picture of young Jane and her surroundings. Jane's curiosity and defiance make her an endearing protagonist, and her bond with Vanlo highlights the beauty of friendship that crosses social divides. The pacing is spot on, balancing thrilling moments, like Jane’s trek through the woods, with reflective scenes that show her fascination with Romany culture. The descriptions of music, dance, and shared meals bring the Romany camp to life, inviting readers to step into its vibrant world. The themes of adventure, self-discovery, and embracing diversity are skillfully woven throughout the narrative, making it both entertaining and thought-provoking. This engaging story made me eager to follow Jane’s bold spirit as she continues her journey in the series.
