Paths Into Darkness and Light is the first book in the Beacon of Hope series by Jeffrey Hallett. Dr. Tricia Carling was a reclusive but brilliant scientist who was happy with her life just the way it was. However, things change when her calm and quiet life takes a dramatic turn following a mysterious accident. Suddenly, she has extraordinary abilities, and Tricia is thrust into a reality she neither sought nor is prepared for. As she wrestles with these changes, a shadowy terrorist organization emerges with plans that hint at a far more insidious global threat. Forced to leave the safety of her lab behind, Tricia embarks on a journey of self-discovery and reluctant heroism. The fate of humanity rides on her shoulders. Can she get hold of her powers before it is too late?
Jeffrey Hallett crafts a strong and intriguing origin story that blends science fiction with real-world tension. Tricia is a refreshing protagonist. She is not a crybaby. Instead, she is introspective, intelligent, and grounded. Her transformation is portrayed while keeping her emotions in mind. I loved how the author didn’t just jump right into this heroic tale; he took his time and ensured that things were realistic. Rather than diving straight into superhero tropes, the narrative thoughtfully explores Tricia’s internal conflict, making her journey both relatable and compelling. The pace of the story is fast, with each chapter revealing more about the dark web of conspiracy. The author effectively builds suspense as Tricia is drawn into a conflict that transcends her scientific world. The story is exciting, entertaining, and immersive! Paths Into Darkness and Light is a great start to the series, and I cannot wait to see what happens next.
