Patient Zero by Emil Šabanović follows the stories of five patients as they navigate their struggles with the help of their therapists. A twenty-two-year-old woman suffering from DPDR slowly starts to overcome her dissociation with reality after some therapy sessions. Intrusive, violent thoughts plague a woman with OCD, but she finds hope in doing the exercises that her therapist assigns her. After an argument with her boyfriend, a forty-year-old woman loses sensation in her left leg. She begins her journey of recovery through therapy, trying to regain her dissociative limb. A delusional woman imagines an encounter with her neighbor, triggering a chain of events that requires the authorities to show up. After decades of treating others, a therapist suffering from dissociative amnesia becomes his own patient.

Patient Zero is a captivating narrative that sheds light on mental health disorders and their impact on people's lives in different ways. Author Emil Šabanović also explores the dynamics that exist between therapists and their patients, following five different stories featuring patients with their own unique mental health disorders. The characters are ordinary people whose lives have been transformed due to mental health issues, and now, they are on their way to recovery with the help of their therapists. Despite the subject matter, each story offers the reader a sense of hope, even when the characters find themselves out of their comfort zones. I loved how every therapist in the story had their own way of interacting with their patient. Overall, I found this to be a book that leaves you with a lot to think about, especially the last story. If you enjoy stories that tackle mental health and psychological issues, you will definitely enjoy this one!
