"Patriotic Gamble" by Ken Gorman is a tale fraught with politics, intrigue, possible conspiracy, suspense and romance. The plot of this book could be ripped from the headlines. The focus of this book is the Presidential Reelection Campaign of President Herbert Atkinsen. The main character is Chief of Staff, Steve Wagner. Atkinsen has not been quite the same since the death of his wife early in his first term. The President had made the decision to change his running mate. His plan was to seek union between the two parties by asking George Granger, a member of the opposite party. Wagner thought the President was making a mistake but could not reason with the man. There seemed to be a question of the President winning the Electoral Vote. The President came to the conclusion that due to health problems he would be unable to fulfill his second term but he was determined his opposition would not be President. Therefore, he came up with an elaborate plan to manipulate the situation.

The dialog in this book is very realistic. During several scenes I felt as if I was setting in on a meeting between the President, his Chief of Staff and an adviser. "Patriotic Gamble" is an entertaining and fascinating story about the behind-the-scenes activity of a Presidential Campaign. I had never before thought about the role of the Chief of Staff. It was impossible for Steve Wagner to balance his personal life and career at the same time as is evidenced by the separation. I will never look at a Presidential Campaign the same way again.
