Peanut Butter Cookies by Catina Noble is a short story told through the eyes of Camila, as she navigates the difficult last months of her mom Gina’s life. It chronicles her weekly visits to see her mom, who is battling illness in the hospital. Camila, known as Cookie, has a new job but tries her best to balance her own life while staying committed to her mother’s happiness. Before each visit, she stops at the shop on the hospital's first floor to buy a peanut butter cookie for her mother, her favorite. It’s become a sliver of light amid the harsh reality of her mom’s life. Gina's wishes about her care and privacy add a bit of adversity and complexity to an already difficult situation. In the end, Camila can fulfill one final promise she has made to Gina. This heartfelt story captures the love between mother and daughter.
This book initially caught my attention because of its title, but as I read Peanut Butter Cookies, I began to feel like I was stepping into a very real, very emotional story. Catina Noble’s writing is straightforward but so full of feeling, like when Cookie thinks: “Each time we got together, we strengthened invisible, already strong roots.” I really connected with how the narrative shows the strength and tenderness in everyday moments, like stopping to pick up a treat for her mom. It’s a quick read, but there’s a lot of detail packed into each page, and the pacing keeps your attention all the way through. What stuck with me most was the honesty with which an emotionally heavy topic was handled between a mother and daughter who loved each other deeply.
