Piper Becomes A Big Sister is a children's book written and illustrated by Tammy Lempert. During a visit by Grandpa Joe, young Eddie looks distraught and tells his grandfather that he does not want a new brother or sister because it means everything will change. Grandpa Joe sits with Eddie and tells the story of a cat who gives birth to a single kitten named Piper. With no siblings, Piper listens to her friends complain about their brothers and sisters being annoying. She is glad to have no siblings but soon learns that she is about to become a big sister. Piper thought her mother would change her mind if she already had a baby, so Piper acts like a baby, which only makes her mother giggle. She feigns illness and hides her toys, but before Piper knows it, baby Max is born. He cries and is messy, and one day Piper curls up with him and they both sleep soundly.
Tammy Lempert's tale about no longer being an only child is beautifully written and illustrated. One of the biggest fears a child has is that they have to share - something which is quite a foreign concept for an only child. But the story of a grandfather telling this wonderful tale of a kitten without siblings certainly shows that even those of us with tiny toes have giant hearts with enough love to go around. Sometimes parents need a little bit of help regarding the new addition to their lives, and when an older sibling steps up and selflessly gives that help, life in the home becomes much happier for all concerned. Besides, I can say from my own experience that babies can be fun, except for a stinky diaper. Letting children read Piper Becomes A Big Sister is a great way to help them see how older siblings can play a very important role in the family. I highly recommend it to be read to little ones aged three and over who are about to fill such a very big role.
