In Planet of Stones, David R. Beshears invites readers into the world of Lieutenant Connelly, a Monitor who has been sent back 100,000 years into the past to observe two humanoid species: the primitive Alphas and the more sophisticated Littles. Isolated at his outpost with only his AI companion, Box, for company, Connelly is shocked when he receives a sudden recall to Central, the underground facility that serves as the mission’s command center. His journey back is filled with peril and unexpected twists, leading him to confront the very species he was meant to study in silence. Upon finally reaching Central, Connelly uncovers a mission that is far more complex and morally challenging than he ever imagined. The novella skillfully blends science fiction, adventure, and ethical quandaries, creating a narrative that is engaging and thought-provoking.
The immersive world-building in Planet of Stones captivated me. David R. Beshears skillfully brings to life the alien landscapes and their inhabitants with vivid imagery and attention to detail. The narrative explores themes of responsibility and the consequences of human advancement, presenting them in a refreshing and meaningful manner. Connelly’s evolution from a mere observer to an active participant in shaping the future is compelling, even if subtly conveyed. The bond he develops with Box and the Littles adds a significant layer of emotional resonance. The pacing is spot-on, oscillating between reflective moments and thrilling action. The ethical dilemmas posed by the mission's true purpose linger long after the conclusion, prompting readers to reflect deeply on humanity's role in crafting the future.
