Prisoner of the Pearls by Karen Cogan is a story that hops between the present day and the 1820s. When the story opens, Debra is in the present at the historic home her Aunt Lacy left her, along with a very special pearl necklace. The necklace comes with very specific instructions to never wear them. Debra cannot resist the temptation of trying them on just once and, unfortunately for Debra, when she closes the clasp the pearls are sealed and cannot be removed from around her neck. Debra soon finds herself in 1821. There she meets Abby and they form an instant friendship. She also meets and quickly falls in love with Jeremy. Her necklace causes a stir amongst the pirates that will do whatever it takes to get the pearls. Debra travels back to the present each time someone tries to pull the pearls from her neck. Debra finds herself in terrible and scary situations because of the necklace, including being near death. Jeremy tries his best to protect her and even ends up traveling to the present day with her before the mystery of the necklace is revealed.
I found Prisoner of the Pearls to be an exhilarating read. Karen Cogan supplied excitement, adventure, pirates, love, friendship, inspiration and more throughout the book. I found myself neglecting my chores to continue reading Prisoner of the Pearls as often as I could. I was never sure whether Debra would return to her own time or remain in the past and it kept me turning the pages to find the answer. Prisoner of the Pearls has something for all types of readers to enjoy.
