Pug and Puppy by Janina Kelly is about Paula, a cute little pug who really relies on her quiet routine and house rules. Her calm world disappears when a woman and an energetic Bernese puppy named Ben move into the chalet to stay. Ben has so much energy and makes so much noise that the small pug feels completely miserable in her space. After brushing off Ben’s attempt to play, Paula slips away into the mountains to talk with her close friends, the marmots. They gently remind her that she used to be the lonely outsider when she first arrived in town years ago. This chat gives her a whole new perspective, sending her home to invite Ben out to play. By the end of the day, can Paula find a way to accept this loud puppy and create a special connection with him?
Pug and Puppy by Janina Kelly is an adorable children’s picture book that explores acceptance in a very gentle way. Tommy Hardman’s fun illustrations are packed with great backdrops that add a lot of personality to the engaging text. It is written perfectly for children, showing how changing your mindset can turn negative feelings into something positive for everyone around you. The message comes through naturally through recreation and empathy. It does a lovely job of reminding kids that thinking about their own past struggles can help them treat a new person with the patience they truly deserve. The mountain setting is a gorgeous location to highlight lessons about kindness and emotional growth. It’s a comforting read that gives kids a wonderful example of how to make people feel included in a blended household.
