In Pull, C.J. Finch introduces us to Alex Helmsley, a man with a rare ability. Since childhood, he discovered that when he touched anyone, he could read all their memories, thus the pull. He wears gloves to prevent this from happening as the memories haunt him. His brother Drew is aware of his ability but does not have the same powers. Together, they run a data capture company storing sensitive information for the government and large corporations. The problems begin when a file from a competitor is mailed to Alex, which, if it becomes public knowledge, will destroy their credibility. As the scenario becomes ever more dangerous, Alex discovers others can pull, and also people with the ability to push. Memories are distorted and wiped, and unwitting victims are ordered to carry out actions that they no longer remember. It is a race to redress the balance of good versus evil.
I enjoyed Pull by C.J. Finch, part mystery thriller and part fantasy. The idea of reading their memories from birth on contact with strangers is a fascinating concept. The plot is intricate, as the reader is never quite sure if the information is correct, especially from characters who can push, that is, reverse the procedure. Who is telling the truth and who is lying? What is the reality? There are several twists which keep the reader guessing, and a horrific death comes as a shock, while another reported death turns out to be false. There are exciting scenes as Alex and his brother Drew confront the villain, or are there more than one? No one is quite who they appear to be. I was captivated, and I think you will be too. I suspect there will be more to come in this series.
