Termed a Young Authors Project, Pulse is a collection of mesmerizing poems by middle-grade children, with classroom teacher Sheila Rowe organizing the collection into a beautifully crafted poetic narrative. "Life is a Wheel" is a poignant poem that highlights the cyclic nature of life and everything it entails. In "Abuelita's Tamales," a young girl travels down memory lane and recalls her happiest moments spent with her beloved grandma. An extraordinary student feels the pangs of loneliness and struggles with peer pressure and self-doubt in "Academics." The poem "Love Isn't Real" is a soulful expression of unrequited love. "Yearn" is a beautiful poem that speaks about the bittersweet ache of longing for a loved one. "Dream in Progress" illustrates the ever-evolving nature of our dreams and desires.
Pulse is one of the most eclectic poetry collections I've read all year. Compiled by classroom teacher Sheila Rowe, the works of many talented young authors have been brought together into a single book that leaves a smile on the reader’s face. It's not just a children's book, but an engrossing collection for any poetry aficionado. I was pleasantly surprised by the diverse themes touched upon in this collection. Some of these poems explore the everyday struggles of adolescent life, while others delve into universal themes such as love, friendship, family, and even hope. I enjoyed every single poem, but something about "Abuelita's Tamales" made me really happy, and it was probably my personal favorite of the bunch. It's a heartwarming collection that I highly recommend to all poetry lovers.
