Quick and Quirky Stories and Photos by Lorin Lee Cary is an anthology of short stories and black-and-white photos. The stories could be said to represent the fringe of everyday life. For example, in “Obsession,” we find a man struggling to deal with his hair loss; in “The Grackle Did It,” a woman approaches a detective to discover why decapitated sparrows keep appearing in her yard; in “The Job” the main character struggles to explain what he does for a living when his job is one that most people find distasteful; “Rosie” examines the secret life of a waitress.

The photos contain some of the standard ironies. For example, a sign for “Genuine Fake Watches,” or a pier with a “Positively No Fishing” sign next to fishermen. There are also several that are unique, such as the woman perusing a postcard rack (presumably in Paris). The right half of the rack is covered with standards, such as the Eiffel Tower and the Mona Lisa, while the left half contains postcards of nude women. There are almost thirty stories in Quick and Quirky Stories and Photos. It was hard to choose a favorite, but, if forced, it would be “Show Don’t Tell” because I have attended writer’s groups. It appealed to my extremely dark humor. Although the title makes it seem like this is a random selection of anecdotes, Lorin Lee Cary chose stories that connected through the characters' everyday (but unordinary for most of us) lives. I especially recommend this book for people who enjoy dark humor.
