Ramonst by A.F. Knott is a dark southern fiction novel filled with suspense, thrills, and mystery. This is a book that would appeal most to a mixed audience of young adults and adults who enjoy dark Gothic fiction. The year is 1970 and an eleven-year-old boy travels with his family to see his Nana. Along the way to Nana, his mother tells him the story of Ramonst and the boy shares his memories of his previous visits, the horrors he has experienced, his good memories, and the stories he has been told by others. A teenage killer named Clyne was known for his animal cruelty, but recently rumors suggest that he took his first human life when he chased a boy up a tree and shot him.

Ramonst by A.F. Knott is very much a dark novel. There were moments when it made me feel sick, afraid, disgusted, and intrigued. The story itself is very dark, yet the boy that acts as the main character has an air of innocence about him that drew me deeper and deeper into the story. I found the idea that the boy keeps a journal of all of his memories to be interesting as it allows him to look back at his memories. I really hated the character Clyne as a person, but A.F. Knott did an amazing job in creating such a character to provide a mirror to the main character. My favorite part of the book was the very beginning when I read about the story of Ramonst, as that was the moment when I understood what the title meant and I became intrigued about the rest of the book. Overall, I enjoyed the emotional roller coaster ride this book took me on, and I hope A.F. Knott decides to write a sequel.
