RATS With Backpacks by J.N. Courtney is the true story of a young girl from Glasgow, Scotland, who beat the odds to become an animal behavioral scientist. Raised by a single mother in a poor neighborhood, Donna was fond of animals since childhood. Inspired by her mother's work, Donna decided to become a research scientist herself. The spectacular wildlife in Scotland encouraged her to pursue her passion, and she completed her master's program from the University of Kent. After her mother passed away, Donna continued to work on her PhD and eventually became a behavioral research scientist. She found her dream job when APOPO, a Belgian non-profit, hired her, and she got to work with African giant pouch rats. These HeroRATS are trained to help humans in extraordinary ways.
RATS With Backpacks: Dr. Donna Kean and Her Work at APOPO is a heartwarming true story that is bound to lift your spirits. Featuring real-life pictures of beautiful animals and scientists working with them, this book will appeal to children and older readers alike, especially animal lovers. Dr. Donna Kean is such an inspirational figure. Her story demonstrates how perseverance and dedication in pursuing one's passions help a person succeed in their endeavors. Through reading this book, I learned about scientists training rats and using their keen sense of smell to find landmines in places like Angola, Cambodia, and Mozambique. Author J.N. Courtney shows how these HeroRATS are trained, alongside RescueRATS used for search and rescue operations in Turkey. All in all, it's a fantastic book for kids and animal lovers in general. Highly recommended.
