In Razing Craze by Meredith Good, Allie Trask is having the worst week of her life: she loses her job at the bank and is about to start from zero, her good-on-paper boyfriend dumps her, and she is having panic attacks. She impulsively decides to go on a trip to a Phoenix music festival to enjoy her favorite band, Craze of Cain, and meet her wild best friend, Kit. It leads to a backstage encounter with the brooding, black-clad frontman, Daemon Craze. Their connection is strong and instantaneous. Allie is pulled into Daemon’s life on the tour and eventually into his Los Angeles home. As she builds a new career as a photographer, Daemon’s “family” arrives: the seven strangers are ancient Nephilim who claim that Daemon is half-human, so his existence could unravel the Tapestry of Fate. They want to destroy him. Allie gets into a fight against immortal beings, arming herself with a taser, a hidden blade in her necklace, her boxing skills, and sheer, stubborn will.

Meredith Good entertained me enormously with her character work. Allie is both your Southern sweet girl and a vicious, undeterred, no-nonsense fighter who will not let anybody take the one person that matters most to her after losing everything. Her snarky interior monologues captivated me, with self-deprecating wit and rich Southern colloquialisms. Other characters, including the immortals, are well-drawn and memorable. The worldbuilding in Razing Craze is immersive, and you are pulled into the backstage atmosphere with vodka-soaked dressing rooms and an ethereal realm where the Nephilim monitor their work. The author draws readers into Allie's and Daemon’s inner worlds, delivering clear points of view. The romance is slow-burning, but the action accelerates the pacing in this propulsive story.
