Reginald by Rhonda Mailey is a grim and foreboding tale of family secrets and demons. Leah has inherited her Aunt Shirley’s plantation-style manor in Einer’s Bay, a small seaside town. She incorrectly assumes running away to a small seaside town will provide some respite from her problems, but instead, she’s thrust into a house with otherworldly troubles and needs to seek help from the Guardians of Einer’s Bay. As her house slowly becomes more haunted and Leah feels herself edging into insanity, the real monster lies just outside her generous inheritance, waiting for her to slip up and take a stroll outside. With the help of her aunt’s best friend and a new romantic interest, Leah needs to piece together the puzzles of her aunt’s life if she wants to save herself from becoming Reginald’s latest victim.

Reginald is a hair-raising mystery that had me wrapped around its little finger. Rhonda Mailey has written an exceptional horror novel with several secrets and reveals that had me guessing until the end. The pictures provided are also essential to building the tone and suspense of the plot. At one point I couldn’t sleep and thought I’d read some more of Reginald to help me pass the time. Big mistake! Rhonda’s chosen genre of horror truly lived up to its name. I utterly enjoyed the ancient Egyptian mythology added to the plot as I love tales of Anubis and Ma’at. Even though scary books can be nerve-wracking, I could appreciate the true horror underlying the novel – people can be just as savage as monsters.

When I put the book down, I had to check behind the doors and under the bed before I went to sleep. That’s how good and creepy this book is.
The story builds with loads of sticky tension and unexpected twists and turns. The characters, particularly Leah drew me in until I became so invested that more than once I blurted out instructions , which unfortunately she couldn’t hear.
