In Retribution by Gail Fowler, we meet Erin McKenna. At 27, Erin is trying to put a broken heart back together so she makes a fresh start as a reporter with the local paper in Summit Springs. Paul Callahan is a police officer in Summit Springs; two years ago he lost his wife and soulmate and life had been bleak until he went to the lakes and encountered Erin. And so the flirting began as the two skirted around one another until something happened to push both of them in at the deep end in their jobs – Erin finds a body in the middle of nowhere. The police officer and the reporter are both thrown headfirst into a mystery surrounding a kidnapping and murder and the exposure of a 30-year-old family secret. Can Erin and Paul solve the mystery before any more bodies turn up?
Retribution by Gail Fowler is a light-hearted mystery with some violent and sexual scenes but not too much. It is filled with humor and romance – two things that don’t normally work with a mystery story but this time, they do. It has a great plot and is told by Paul and Erin, each in alternating chapters. The plot flows smoothly and the characters are very strong. Right from the start, we know who they are and what has brought them to Summit Springs and they are incredibly likable people. Retribution is very well written, moving from one character to another, from one place to another easily and smoothly, and with a naturally flowing and descriptive dialog to bring life to every scene. This is a fantastic start for a new author and I really hope that there will be a sequel – we need more of Paul and Erin!
