Revelations: A Tale of Eldritch Horror, the debut novel by Kevin Wright, is a darkly fantastic read worthy of the time it takes to plow through. Meet Peter Poole, our hero, although most would first suspect him of being a zero. He’s a new and uncertain ambulance driver, ready to take on just about nothing in a city that’s teeming with violence, death and un-death. Addicted vampires, werewolves, demons and monsters have taken over the city streets, and, what’s more, there’s a new threat in town. A junky gunslinger, who has no respect for the old ways, arrives and wreaks havoc over what is already mass chaos. Peter, uncertain on how he’s going to help, is also hiding a secret. He’s both dying and undying, ever since he was bitten by a junky vampire on one of his very first ambulance runs. Hated by his partner, needing help from a despot werewolf king, it seems as if the likelihood of Peter’s success is somewhere between zip and none. Except for that one thing he has going for him.
Kevin Wright’s work is a fun, fantastical ride that combines almost all the elements that those who love the fantasy genre enjoy. Excellent descriptions, a fast pace and an exciting read make this a book I can highly endorse. This book, while lengthy, will suck you in from the beginning and will make you want to read it through to the end, so I recommend you pick it up on a day that you have a lot of time to devote to it. I thoroughly enjoyed Revelations: A Tale of Eldritch Horror and look forward to reading more by this inventive new author.
