In Holly Sue Ruddock’s Rise of the Redeemers, Lois takes in Amber, a homeless teenager who escaped a trafficking operation run through MACRO Foods, a humanitarian organization led by Alister Hammon. When Lois’s nephew Martin later joins their household after his missionary parents are killed during an attack on an African girls’ school, the family becomes connected to crimes reaching far beyond Portland. Years later, Martin is a lawyer raising Amber’s daughter, Esther, and investigating MACRO Foods after discovering links between Alister’s organization and vulnerable children who have disappeared. As Martin follows evidence through foster homes and charitable programs, Esther begins learning what happened to her mother. Their search eventually reaches Washington, where powerful connections surrounding Alister make exposing his organization dangerous for everyone involved.
In Rise of the Redeemers, Holly Sue Ruddock delivers Christian supernatural fiction with a concrete spiritual world and relationships that keep the story grounded. Ruddock establishes her supernatural rules naturally, showing angels working inside ordinary settings as demons exploit fear and abuse. Angel’s role as a hospital nurse proves this beautifully when her earthly duties continue alongside her unseen protection of Amber. Faith enters through prayer, Jesus, and spiritual warfare, yet Ruddock spends the novel examining what people owe children failed by institutions meant to protect them. Amber’s dream of unheard children asking who will speak for them gives that question a haunting form. I really like Martin, whose determination to investigate the network tied to children who have disappeared is solid, and who has an incredible arc. The pacing runs at a clip as family history meets legal investigation and spiritual warfare, and readers who enjoy Christian supernatural thrillers will adore this.
