Author Biography

Former Secret Service agent Sean Quarmby was a master of physical protection and protective intelligence for the Clinton and Bush administrations and a key player in the preservation of democracy. An accomplished figure in security and investigations, he helped craft legislation on identity theft, made enormous contributions in how the U.S. fights financial crime, and currently teaches as a professor of criminal justice in North Carolina. Now bringing espionage to life with heart-pounding adrenaline and the inescapable ring of truth, Quarmby crafts can’t-miss political thrillers that take readers on a journey into the darkest reaches of national intelligence.

Upon retiring from the U.S. Secret Service, I looked forward to living a quiet, private life. However, conversations with family and friends often circled back to the same question: “When are you going to write a book about your experiences?” Truthfully, the thought had never crossed my mind. I wasn’t interested in exploiting the historical significance of my time with the Secret Service. But one evening over dinner in Kiawah Island, South Carolina my friends, along with my wife Lani, unintentionally planted a seed. They encouraged me to “write what you know.” For me, that meant delving into the world of espionage, deception, and assassination attempts—a world I know all too well.

In Sean Quarmby's Room 23, John Quinlan became a member of the U.S. Secret Service, where he was assigned to the Counterfeit Currency unit. Quinlan’s objective was to dismantle a covert scheme designed to perfect the APEX counterfeit $100 bill that was circulating in the Bronx, particularly in establishments catering to the Dominican community. After successfully dismantling the APEX counterfeiting operation, Quinlan was promoted to the prestigious Presidential Protection Division’s Room 23. Intelligence from the Secret Service in Washington, D.C. revealed numerous threatening calls to the White House, specifically aimed at the President of the United States. Quinlan found himself navigating a dangerous conspiracy that threatened not only the U.S. President but also the Supreme Leader of North Korea. Quinlan embraced the challenging dual responsibility of safeguarding these prominent figures.

Room 23 was inspired by the authentic experiences of a former special agent with the United States Secret Service. Sean Quarmby crafted a thrilling plot filled with intrigue and espionage. The story was overflowing with action, and the tension kept me riveted throughout. The writing style was captivating, and I found myself engrossed from the beginning to the end. With numerous twists and turns, I could never predict what would happen next. I was unable to set the book aside and flipped through the pages as quickly as possible. The characters were well-crafted and compelling. Each character fulfilled a specific role in the plot, contributing to this distinctive story. I appreciated the additional insights into the Secret Service and its operational methods. The story was superbly written, and there was never a moment of boredom.

This is a great read.
Room 23 took me back to the older Secret Service where agents were “street smart” and expected to be aggressive in their investigations. Well-researched and well-written! Great storyline too - very well done.

I highly recommend this novel. Drawn from the author's experiences in the Secret Service this novel is a tale of international espionage and counterfeiting that could collapse the US economy. I was hooked from page 1 and thoroughly enjoyed the ride.

I didn’t know much about the Secret Service outside of protecting the President. Sean Quarmby explores a lot of other aspects of operations. Really cool story and the ending was a twist I didn’t see coming. No more or it is a spoiler.
