Rotten Gods by Jeremy Bruce Adams unfolds on the planet, Kiru. Asodhra, the planet's sole continent, is home to three major religious caste systems. Pyoshara, the protagonist, is a spoiled and over-privileged boy studying at the priestly Marazhen University in Sonanarth. Accused of being anti-religious, inept at his studies, rebellious, and a loner, he is ordered to attend a school party to socialize with his peers. Tragically, Pyoshara and his classmates are attacked by a rotten god and its followers at the event. This invasion results in the death of many of his classmates, but thankfully, Pyoshara is saved by a mysterious order of priestly assassins. Unfortunately, his friend, Zafira, is brainwashed and mentally tormented by this sinister entity. Will Pyoshara join forces with these assassins to save her? Or will he succumb to fear or even the deception of the enemy?
Jeremy Bruce Adams's Rotten Gods is a captivating read that will submerge you in an expansive world teeming with Asodhran culture. It is a fascinating world where religious affiliations determine a person's position and progress in life. Intriguingly, Asodhra is also a society shrouded in deceit, injustice, secrets, and internal war. Pyoshara’s character development—from an over-indulged, upper-class Marazhen caste devotee to a warrior who fights against injustice and evil—is remarkable. Adams adroitly demonstrates that even in "warrior mode", Pyoshara is still susceptible to faulty thinking and unskilled decision-making. However, his determination to save Zafira and morally do the right thing earns him the "Character of the Year Award" in my book. Pyoshara’s compelling journey seamlessly integrates themes of self-discovery, duty, and bravery. This novel will win the praise of dark fantasy enthusiasts who love narratives that merge vivid world-building, complex character development, and intriguing cultural practices. If you're a fan of the dark fantasy genre, this book is the perfect read for you.
