Rufus & Olivia: A Tail of Acceptance by Michele Walker is a story about a little white cat named Olivia who lives with her humans. One day, her humans return with a surprise, a small black puppy named Rufus. Olivia is not too thrilled to have a new family member, and things don't go smoothly at first. After Olivia gets Rufus into trouble, Rufus shares his feelings with Olivia. They discover that even though they have differences, there are many things they have in common. They begin to enjoy each other's company and celebrate their differences too. At the end of the story, they share one more fun experience with their humans. Discussion questions to extend the story are included at the end.

Michele Walker has written a sweet story about family and acceptance. Kids will enjoy the antics of Rufus and Olivia but will also absorb the underlying theme that even though we may look different, we have many things in common. Rufus & Olivia: A Tail of Acceptance goes beyond just acceptance; it includes a helpful lesson about sharing your feelings and setting boundaries. The illustrations by Quil.and.Ink showcase Olivia and Rufus as the stars of the story. Anyone who has owned a pet will completely relate to the picture of the messy kitchen and Rufus sitting in the middle of it all! Rufus & Olivia: A Tail of Acceptance imparts a valuable lesson through some endearing characters. Parents and kids alike will enjoy spending time with Rufus and Olivia!

One of the best children’s stories out there today. Teachers in pre schools, and kindergarten, should all be reading this to their classes. And utilizing the questions in the back, to engage their kids. Excellent format!

I cannot say enough about this marvelous book! The dynamic of using a cat and dog, who seem to be natural antagonists is perfect! Michele uses these differences, to illustrate to a child’s audience, how easy it can be to accept others who may not look, or act like themselves. Additionally, her questions posed in the back of the book, can be used as teaching, and though-provoking tools. A win-win!!

Wow! What a great way to teach kids about acceptance. I’ve read to my grandson over the phone and he just giggled.
