Nine diverse couples speak about their successful and happy marriages in Rules of Engagement: Learning from Nine Couples Who Make Marriage Work by Dorothy O'Neill, giving useful insights on how to make relationships work and last. The author writes about their struggles and how they dealt with those struggles so that we can use the tips and suggestions to form lasting and happy marriages. All the couples are interesting in their own way and their relationships are enlightening with some ‘take away’ messages that can be helpful to everyone in their own relationships. Everyone wants their marriage to work and at times it's hard to understand the actual problem and how to fix it. These nine couples share with us what has kept their relationship from being destroyed, how one can stop the escalation of conflict in a relationship, how they feel about each other after all these years of being together, and what lessons they can teach us about making it work and staying together in a marriage.

The author’s personal story helps readers connect well with her life and her need to help everyone work towards resolving the issues in their relationships. The book speaks about the topics that often cause conflict and misunderstandings in a relationship, and how to sort it out amicably. The author handles the topic well and the techniques are simple and can be applied to relationships to make them work. It also helps couples to look into their relationships and see where they are going wrong, and make the necessary adjustments and changes so that they find their relationships fulfilling and happy.
