In Rum, Cigars, and Corpses: Roger and Suzanne Mystery Series Book 13, author Jerold Last has mixed espionage, murder mystery, and adventure in a most intriguing plot. The reader’s attention is captured from the very beginning by the author’s well-known characters Roger Bowman and Suzanne Foster. They take the reader on an adventure that is exciting and intriguing. But what really holds the reader’s attention is the historical facts that appear throughout the narrative and are woven into the plot. The other characters, both major and minor, are a delight. Some will be familiar to the reader if they have been keeping up with the series but some are new and very interesting to discover. Each book in this series is different and not predictable at all.
The themes may be familiar to the reader but the skill with which the author has written this book sheds new light on the art of smuggling, money laundering, government manipulations of embassies, and the governments in the countries concerned, especially if it is one with great power and influence. The reader is taken on a journey in which the practical side of people who deal with everyday life, the ups and downs, and the whims of governments are shown to trump all the conniving and cover-ups of the so-called experts and officials. The reader’s journey through the plot is marked by various twists and turns that are so unexpected. The twist at the end of the story is excellent as well as the outcome of the research into the so-called hit-and-run death of a prominent doctor of biochemistry and oncology when on foreign soil. Rum, Cigars, and Corpses is an excellent book that I would gladly read again. It was a most intriguing read and I really enjoyed it.
