Set in 1983, sixteen-year-old Kate, eight-year-old Tosh and six-year-old Ellie woke up on the streets, discovering their mother has abandoned them. Fearing that the authorities would send them to an orphanage, Kate decided to hitch a ride and brought her younger siblings to Medswell. They found refuge in an abandoned bungalow in the English countryside, together with the grumpy Mannis, the alcoholic Dock, and the troubled teenage runaway Saul. The instant satisfaction with S.C. Bryce’s Running is the clear indication in chapter one that it is going to be a great read. Little Ellie didn't make it; the story opens with Kate and Tosh burying their younger sister on a harsh, cold night. They don’t have enough time to mourn and heal from Ellie’s death as Rick, a new arrival in the house, disrupts their squalid life.

Bryce’s paranormal novel is a tightly plotted tale of sharp suspense and it is best not to even try to figure out the story’s direction because you couldn’t. The flawless, straightforward prose narrated in a first person point of view creates a highly engrossing story. Therefore, it is no surprise that every page is engaging. Running features a fascinating cast, particularly Kate. She is a fine protagonist; a strong-willed yet sensitive teen courageously trying to make sure both she and her brother survive their harsh life. The chapters are short which paves way for a very swift read. Akin to the decaying bungalow that Kate calls home, Running is dark and filled with secrets, a story that any readers of the genre will enjoy.
