Whenever I see RV shows on television, I have RV envy. I love road trips, so I couldn’t wait to read RV Oopsies: 101 Dumb Things that RV’ers Do! by Larry MacDonald. Like many people, I thought that you just jump into the RV, start the engine, and off you go. That is so wrong! Larry MacDonald’s book taught me a great deal in a highly entertaining read.

The book is divided into three chapters: Dumb, Dumber, and Dumbest. Over a ten-year period, the author and his wife have traveled many miles in their RV. While on the road, MacDonald collected many stories of woe from fellow travelers. Each dumb story is a short snippet, often with a light-bulb sidebar that highlights the lesson learned from that mishap. As the chapters move along, the stories move from least costly and least invasive, to more expensive and preventable mistakes, and on to the most expensive disasters. RV Oopsies hammers home simple lessons such as: never back up without a spotter, use the right fuel, label everything, don’t buy an RV for a dollar, plan ahead and much more through many illustrative tales of RV nightmares.

The author is from Canada, but these lessons are universal, and they are not geocentric. From prospective RV’ers like myself to novices to the seasoned traveler, this is a great RV Bible. I learned that I am completely ill-equipped to purchase and drive an RV, but rather than discourage me, RV Oopsies by Larry MacDonald made me feel that if the people illustrated in these stories can do it, I can too. Look out, World, I may be road tripping soon!
